Experimental Study on Detonation Characteristics Influenced by Discharge Area in Low Temperature Plasma Generators

  • Fast initiation is the key technology to ensure the working characteristics of pulse detonation engines. This paper investigated the influence of two types of igniter, low temperature plasma generator and spark plug, on initiation properties in dual detonation pipes using acetylene and air mixture. The low temperature plasma generator is an in-house design product. The discharge area was changed to examine the propagation process of detonation wave. The effects of discharge area on propogation of detonation waves were summarized. It is shown that the initiating features by the cold plasma generator are superior to those by the spark plug. With the discharge power fixed, the varation of discharge area has slight influences on flame propagation speed, and detonation wave pressure peaks. Therefore, the use of smaller discharge area in the cold plasma generator can reduce the ignitor volume and ensure the initiation property.
